Hartman Park Field Prep

Introduction

Redmond Park Operations performs daily maintenance on all fields at Hartman Park. Additional fine tuning work may be desired by the coaches or board members on a daily basis. The following list of acceptable practices is intended to guide individuals as they ready the fields for play.

In the past, well meaning individuals in their zeal to "get the games off" have solved "today's" problem but sometimes have created much larger problems. Many of you miss seeing the work done by the Redmond Park Operations staff, who work the fields to make them playable in the early spring and throughout the season. With a little forethought, the fields can be made ready for play each day without sacrificing the next days schedule! (Or creating unsafe conditions!)

Please observe the following guidelines for field prep. If you have any questions please ask the field manager or your board member on duty. If you see other people doing the wrong thing, please take the initiative to help them do it right. Your efforts can make the difference!

New bases are purchased each year. Little League has been issued one set per field. In the event of theft or damage, notify Redmond Park Operations staff and new bases will be issued.

Ideal or Dry Conditions

Set Bases:

  • The bases should sit level on the field, no holes around them.

Rake and Tamp:

  • Rake to fill in the holes and to level the area around the bases, home plate, and the pitcher's mound.

  • Remove any rocks.

  • Tamp to firm any holes that have been filled.

Line:

  • Base lines and batters boxes

FOR DRY CONDITIONS:

  • Water infields lightly to settle dust. (Do not over water, mix will turn mushy.)

End Of Games:

  • Pull and store the bases

  • Cap the pegs

  • Lock the restrooms

Wet Conditions

Squeegee Puddles:

  • Spread the puddles out across the dirt infield, keeping the mud away from the edge of the grass (infield & outfield). 'Mis avoids building lips and damaging the grass. Diamond Dry may be added to the wet mushy areas to speed the drying process. Please avoid digging trenches to drain the fields.

  • DO NOT add any materials other than approved infield mix or Diamond Dry. (Do not add sand, gravel, or floor dry.)

  • DO Fill holes with infield mix, rake, and tamp.

  • DO Set bases: the bases should sit level on the field, no holes around them.

  • DO Rake: rake to fill any holes around the bases, home plate, and pitcher mound.

  • DO Remove any rocks. Tamp to firm mix.

  • DO Line: line bases and batter's boxes.

End Of Game:

  • Pull and store the bases

  • Cap the pegs

  • Lock the restrooms
